NATURAL LOGARITHM – (noun) is a logarithm whose base is ‘e’. See LOGARITHM & ‘e’.

NATURAL NUMBER – (noun) A natural number is any of the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and so on. 0 is also sometimes taken to be a natural number.

NEAT – (adjective) means clean and in order.” The children were taught to leave the classroom neat and tidy before they went home. She looked very neat in her new dress.

NEGATIVE 1. Negative – (adjective) means that something is a minus quantity. For example minus four – (-4) is a negative number. 2. Positive is the opposite of negative. 3. Negative – (noun) also means ‘not yes’. “When he asked if he had won, the answer was in the negative.” 4. A person who is always saying that it can’t be done and we will never win and things like that is called a negative – (adjective) person. “Don’t be so negative; look on the bright side of things for a change.

NEGOTIATE – (verb) means to talk to someone and get them to agree to something. The word is often used when talking about a business sale or about a difference between two countries.

“It took him 3 visits to negotiate that big sale. The leaders of the two countries met and talked until they negotiated peace and now the fighting has stopped.

NEUTER – (noun) is the sex of something that is neither masculine or feminine. “The sex of a ball is neuter. So are the sexes of an apple, an orange, a house, a garden all neuter”.

NEUTRON – (noun) A neutron is a particle from which atoms are made. It has approximately the same weight as a proton, but no charge. See diagram 38.

NIL – (noun) is another word for zero or nothing. The symbol is 0.

NOMINAL – (adjective) 1. Nominal in grammar means like a noun or serving as a noun. A nominal clause – (See CLAUSE) will therefore be a clause which acts as a noun in a sentence. What to do is the question. Here “what to do’ ” is a nominal clause as it is serving as a noun, the subject of the verb ‘is’. 2. Nominal also means in name only. “He is the nominal head of the business as his manager really runs it. “ 3. Nominal also means too small to be important. “Because she was very poor the doctor charged her a nominal sum of R1.”

NONAGON – (noun) A nonagon is a 9 sided polygon.

NOON – (noun) is another name for 12 o’clock in the middle of the day. “In Cape Town there is a gun on Signal Hill which fires every day at noon.

NORMAL – (adjective) 1. Normal means what is usually expected. “The normal temperature of a body is 37 degrees centigrade.” This is the temperature that one can expect a healthy body to be. “It is normal for the weather to be cold in winter.” 2. In maths normal means at right angles. If you say draw another line normal to this line it is the same as saying draw a line at right angles to this line. See RIGHT ANGLE

NORTH – (noun) If you stand with your right hand side towards the East – (where the sun rises) then North will be straight ahead of you. Also in South Africa – (South Africa is in the southern hemisphere) if you stand facing the sun at 12 o’clock midday you will be facing North. See diagram 39.

NORTHERN HEMISPHERE – (noun) The northern hemisphere is the top half of the globe. See GLOBE. People who live in the Northern Hemisphere have summer when we have winter. See diagram 44.

NORTH POLE – (noun) The north pole is the northern end of the earth’s axis. See diagram 44.

NOTE – (noun) 1. A note is a small piece of information that is written down. “He took a note of her telephone number.” 2. A bank note is a piece of printed paper that is used for money. “He paid him half in notes and half in coins. “ 3. If you say to someone, ““Take note of that.” ” you means that they must give careful attention to that. 4. In music a note means either a musical sound, or the mark on a piece of written music that represents a musical sound or the key on a piano that makes a particular musical sound. “““She could sing a very high note.” “He could not read the notes on the sheet of music so he had to play by ear.” “He played only on the white notes of the piano.”

NOTHING – (noun) means nothing. “Although they heard a sound when they went to look there was nothing there.”

NOTICE – (noun) 1. A notice is something that is written and put in a place where a lot of people can see it. “The notice says that the house is for sale. He put a notice in the newspaper that he was looking for a job. “2. Take notice of that means the same as take note of. See NOTE.

NOUGHT – (noun) is another name for a zero. It is written 0.

NOUN – (noun) A word is called a noun if it is the name of something. For example book, chair, man, road are all nouns. See PROPER NOUN.

 

NUCLEUS – (noun) 1. A nucleus is a central part around which other parts are collected. “John, Mary and I were the nucleus of our sports group; the rest depended on us three for making all the plans for the year. “ 2. Nucleus is also the name used for the central part of an atom. See diagram 38.

NUMBER – (noun) A number is a word which tells you how many. A number represents a quantity. One, fifty, thirty three are all numbers. The symbols for them are 1, 50 & 33. See SYMBOL. See CARDINAL NUMBER & ORDINAL NUMBER. See Appendix IV.

NUMBER CONCEPT – (noun) This is an exercise in arithmetic where the student learns to get the idea of numbers by drawing pictures – (or looking at pictures) with a number of the same objects in the picture and then learning to recognise the number of objects in each picture. See diagram 50. See CONCEPT.

NUMBER LINE – (noun) A number line is a line that is divided into equal divisions with numbers at each division. It usually starts at zero on the left hand side and goes up from one to 10 or 20 depending on the number of divisions. A number line can be extended to both the left and the right. This is usually shown by an arrow. See diagram 50. A number line can be used for illustrating addition, subtraction multiplication and division. See your text books.

NUMERAL – (noun) is the name for a symbol standing for a number. 7 is the numeral for the number seven.

NUMERATOR – (noun) See definition at DENOMINATOR.

NUMERICAL – (adjective) means with the use of numerals. 9 is the numerical form of the number nine.
